The Gospel’s Impact on Women in India
A surprising element of Jesus’ ministry was the involvement of women. One woman who factored prominently in Jesus’ ministry was Mary Magdalene. Jesus had cast seven demons from her, and we read in Luke 8:1-3 that she was among the women who accompanied Jesus and provided for Him and His 12 disciples. She was there during Jesus’ crucifixion (Matt. 27:55-56), His burial (Matt. 27:57-61), and she was the first to see Jesus after His resurrection (Mark 16:9; John 20:11-18). In Paul’s ministry, he encouraged Timothy to teach women (1 Tim. 2:11). The gospel has liberated women and given them a new standing. A husband’s prayers may be hindered if he does not treat his wife well (1 Pet. 3:7). She is an heir of the grace of life.
Yet, women around the world have not always been treated this way, especially in India. In India, many women face limited access to healthcare. As per the 2011 Census, India’s female literacy rate was 65.46%, while the male literacy rate was 82.14. According to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) 2022, over 445,000 cases of crimes against women were reported, including domestic violence, rape, and harassment. Although declining, around 23.3% of women (20-24 years old) were married before 18. In 2021, the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) reported 12,931 cases of children below 18 years old being kidnapped for marriage, with 12,788 of these victims being girls. Read More
