The Philippines: The Fruit of Faithful Labor

When I was growing up, people used to tell us children to stay indoors because of the crazy weather in April. The extreme heat alternated with sudden rain showers that suppressed the dust and caused steam to rise from the ground like mist from a boiling pot. The old folks used to say that this kind of weather caused stomachaches and made dogs go crazy.

But now, my generation has become the “old folks” in our village. And with the benefit of age and reflection, I see things differently. That same heat and those rains, though uncomfortable and even chaotic at times, are exactly what God uses to bring food from the earth. The fruit, vegetables, grain, and grass that sustain both people and animals spring forth from the very conditions we once feared. The process isn’t always pleasant, but it is purposeful. Read More
