“Therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus” (2 Tim. 2:1). With these tender yet powerful words, Paul speaks to Timothy from a Roman prison, knowing his own life is nearing the end. The world around Timothy was collapsing into persecution, false doctrines were spreading like wildfire, believers were discouraged, and spiritual leaders were turning away. Yet Paul does not tell Timothy to be strong in his own personality, experience, or human courage. He points Timothy to the only source of unshakeable strength, the grace of Christ Jesus.
Grace here is not merely forgiveness; it is divine enablement, the supernatural strength that empowers weak people to do mighty things for God. Paul himself had learned this secret when God told him, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is made perfect in weakness” (2 Cor. 12:9).
